Mazzy Star’s Dreamscape of Despair
Mazzy Star was a bit of an anomaly in the early ’90s music scene. An embodiment of moody, introspective cool, mixed with a hefty dose of dream-pop mystique, they were a sonic oasis in a desert of grunge and boy bands. They emerged from the ashes of the late ’80s, led by the sultry, haunting vocals of Hope Sandoval and the guitar work of the late David Roback. Their sound was a delicious cocktail of psychedelic rock, blues, and the kind of atmospheric melancholy that made you want to light a candle and contemplate the meaning of life—or at least your current relationship.
